A vegetable garden…what a great way to make friends, both young and old, while having fun! In conjunction with the Museum exhibit that features World War II Victory Gardens, the Stearns History Museum is planning a summer garden program for seniors and children. Children will get their hands dirty planting, nurturing, and harvesting their own vegetables and learning, in the process, about healthy eating and outdoor exercise. Experienced senior gardeners will be on hand to guide and mentor the junior gardeners (and to get their hands dirty, too). The seniors and juniors can be related (grandparents and grandchildren) but need not be. The Project welcomes people of all ages and relationships.
Making connections between gardening in the past – heirloom seeds and raising food out of national necessity – and gardening in the present – locally-sourced food and environmental awareness – will be part of the program. Crafts and activities that support this learning are also part of the summer-long project.
The camp will run on Thursdays from May 16, 2013 through August 22, 2013 from 9 a.m.-NOON. Cost: $50. Scholarships possible. Volunteer senior gardeners welcome! To register or volunteer for the program at the Stearns History Museum or for more information go to or call 320-253-8424.
