During the 2-day immersion into the Picturing Writing process, teachers will learn how they can combine creativity, rigor and deep thinking required by the ELA Common Core in a progression of art-infused, literature-based integrated units of study. Workshop participants will learn how they can teach narrative and informational writing, as well as incorporate opinion/persuasive pieces, in a series of seamlessly integrated projects designed to engage ALL LEARNERS. Using quality picture books as mentor texts and simple crayon resist art techniques, teachers will explore the dynamic relationship between pictures and words. EARN 16 CEU Hours!

WORKSHOP FACILITATOR: Beth Olshansky, Director of the Center for the Advancement of Art-Based LIteracy at the University of Nw Hampshire in Durham and author of The Power of PIctures: Creating Pathways to Literacy Through Art (Jossey-Bass, 2008)

Picture Writing has a two-decade-long history of proven effectiveness for a wide range of learners. It can be easily woven throughout the language arts, science and social studies curriculum. An array of concrete, visual tools such as storyboards, specially designed brainstorming sheets and accordion folders will ensure that students create art and writing with clear literary purpose. No art experience required for the workshop!

Participants receive The Power of PIctures: Creating Pathways to Literacy Through Art book/instructional DVD by Beth Olshansky as well as comprehensive teacher's manuals and a packet of poetry masters. All are included in the registration fee!
