You know Paul “Stretch” Diethelm as a guitarist extraordinaire, but you probably don’t know that he played drums to Van Halen before he ever picked up an electric guitar and attempted Eddie’s solos.

Find out why Paul ditched the drums when he was 16 and hear him talk about his musical roots, influences and memories when he joins George Maurer to kick off the second season of George’s “Stripped Down” series at 7:30 Sept. 11.

George will interview Paul and accompany him as he plays some of his favorite songs, plus a few of his own compositions, on a stage stripped down to just George’s piano and Paul’s guitar — or two, or three.

Paul is best known locally for his work with the Fabulous Armadillos, Rock n Roll Xmas Spectacular and rock trio Slip Twister, a St Cloud mainstay for 25 years. He spent eight years on tour with Jonny Lang and has opened for the Rolling Stones, partied with Aerosmith, written gold records, played on two Grammy-nominated albums and performed alongside the likes of Eric Clapton and B.B. King. But his heart was always here (and so was his wife, Julie), and he is happy to be back in St. Cloud and playing Minnesota stages.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear Paul recount his guitar influences from Eddie Van Halen and beyond — the biggest being his older brother, Joe, who turned him on to guitar gods like Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa — and his musical history from his roots in Watertown, Minnesota, to St. Cloud’s legendary Greystone Rockers, adventures with his Slip Twister band mates Jay O’Donnell and Mike Zeleny, world tours with Lang and more recent escapades with the Armadillos and Rock n Roll Xmas Spectacular cast.
