Jean Anouilh’s 20th century adaptation of Sophocles’ class tragedy.
Ethics and egos collide as a reluctant dictator and a headstrong young woman engage in a deadly struggle of pride and power. Written in Nazi-occupied France, Anouilh’s version of Sophocles’ classic tragedy offers a darkly complex view of an authoritarian regime, plumbing a dangerous middle ground between cynicism and idealism.
