CSB|SJU Theater Department's Production of UBU

The College of Saint Benedict Theater Department is ecstatic to announce the first production of the year, Ubu. A modern interpretation of Alfred Jarry’s absurdist classic Ubu Roi, translated by Barbra Wright. Directed by Jon Ferguson of Theatre Forever. Beginning October 16 in the Colman Black Box Theater located in the Benedictine Arts Center (BAC) on the Saint Benedict campus.

Welcome to Ubu, a dirty and rotten, absurdist adventure, of terrible proportions. Come along as Pa Ubu (and his band of misfits) attempts to dominate and destroy all, to become king. Written by Alfred Jarry at the age of 14 in 1880’s France, Ubu Roi, which translates to King Ubu or King Turd, is an absurdist classic. Ubu is the manifestation of a terrible teacher Jarry particularly despised. Ubu is the telling of the misfortunes befallen on this hated teacher. Pulling inspiration from Shakespeare’s MacBeth and other historical events, Ubu is a manifestation of childhood imagination and humor.
