Sinclair Lewis Writers' Conference

Sinclair Lewis Writers' Conference

Presented by Sinclair Lewis Foundation at Sauk Centre High School auditorium

This year the conference keynote speaker will be Freya Manfred. She will read from Frederick Manfred’s recently reissued 1945 novel, BOY ALMIGHTY, and from her published poetry, which evokes the sacred and humorous aspects of family, friendship, and the natural world, calling us to “grow in hope with the earth.”

Four other presenters will join Freya during the day-long conference, digging into the process of writing as well as selling what you write. Thomas Pope, screenwriter, will discuss “A New Way of Understanding Characters” and “How a Story Evolves and Grows.” Ashley Shelby, novelist and former environmental journalist, will delve into “Climate Fiction: Writing Our Impacted World.” Producer Jim Gambone and writer Bob Beverage will co-present on “How to Navigate a Successful Writer/Producer Collaboration.”

This highly praised conference has, in past years, attracted such renowned keynote speakers as Frederick Manfred, Robert Bly, Jon Hassler, Carol Bly, Leif Enger, Bill Holm, Bart Sutter, Patricia Hampl, Jim Klobuchar, Kevin Kling, Don Shelby, James Bradley, Faith Sullivan, Will Weaver and Gary Paulsen.

The conference is on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at the Sauk Centre High School auditorium in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.  Cost is $85, including a catered lunch and breaks.  College students and senior citizens may register for $75; high school students may attend for free, but must register and pay $20 for lunch and breaks.  The conference day ends with a reception at the local Palmer House Hotel (door prizes and cash bar).

To celebrate 30 years of the Sinclair Lewis Writers Conference and the 100th anniversary (belated) of Lewis’s breakthrough novel, Main Street, we are hosting an evening of entertainment following the conference. Plan on joining us for Stevie Ray’s Improv Company and Dan Chouinard, a popular troubadour.

For the first time, the Sinclair Lewis Writers Conference will be available virtually as well as in-person. Cost for the virtual event, including the evening entertainment, is $65. For details about the conference, go to www.sinclairlewisfoundation.org.  You can register online or send your check payable to “Sinclair Lewis Writers Conference” and mail it to Jim Umhoefer; 39336 Wild Rose Ct; Sauk Centre, MN 56378.
