I enjoy the marriage of materials, such as combining fabricated or cast metallic elements with ceramic forms. Sometimes I establish a hierarchy of form through use of specific – and perhaps more precious – materials. Having emerged from a background as an illustrator, I utilize my 2D skills in my 3D work; it is critical that I reconcile surface decoration or treatment, with form. My imagery makers reference to a great many influences, cultural or otherwise.

I can’t seem to escape the portrait. Whether painting a commissioned portrait, a figurative piece, or a single rose, it’s still a portrait to me. Each thing, animated or not, has life… a spirit, an essence. The thing in front of me is as essential as the brushstrokes I put on the canvas.

I am an observational painter of objects that have been discarded. Old industry, machines, and tools attract me because of their visual interest, but also because of their stories. Each tool or broken object was originally used to carry out a task or an idea by someone. I feel connected with that story when I take the time to paint or draw.
