Celebrate the Smithsonian’s Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans & World War II and Minnesota’s Secret Language School, brought to us by the Twin Cities Japanese American Citizens League, with special activities on Saturday, November 23.
Children, ages 3 and older, can learn about the Japanese-American experience during storytime at noon, and then make a craft to take home. Edwin “Bud” Nakasone’s presentation will take place at 1 p.m. He will gice a first-hand account of his time at the U.S. Military Intelligence School at Fort Snelling. As a native Hawaiian, Nakasone offers a unique perspective. He was 14 at the time the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Four years later, Nakasone would travel to Minnesota to hone his Japanese skills at the language school. He would serve in Osaka during the post-war occupation of Japan, returning to Minnesota afterward to live.
Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans & World War II is on display through January 5, 2020, and Minnesota’s Secret Language School will run through March 2020. Both exhibits examine the impact of World War II on the lives and rights of Japanese-American citizens and promote conversations about how we as Americans treat those of different nationalities.
Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 4-17, with a family rate that caps out at $17. The family rate includes two adults and the children ages 5-17 of the same household. Children 4 and under have free admission. Members are free. Membership packages are available for purchase.
