Another Country

Another Country

Presented by CSB/SJU Fine Arts Series at Saint John's University Art Center

The impact of immigration on the United States has been enormous. Scots have been arriving in the country for Centuries and the exhibition assesses, on one level, the considerable influence that their culture has had on the United States through colonial emigration while, on another, it tackles issues with contemporary migration, a subject that has rapidly growing relevance in Minnesota in the current political climate.

The project brings together a group of eleven artists from a number of distinct, ethnically diverse backgrounds all born or currently living in Scotland. The work presented is personal as most of the artists are migrants themselves and the key goal is to highlight with sensitivity their very varied perspectives.

Conversations around migration, race and difference are rare in Scotland and currently controversial in the United States and an extensive public engagement programme will be held alongside the exhibition to provide a platform for dialogue and discussion contributing to the ongoing wider debate in Minnesota.

The project is co-curated by Euan Gray, Elaine Rutherford and Alberta Whittle.
