BAROCCO
Musical Treasures of the 17th & 18th Centuries
At the core of the word “baroque,” or in Italian “barocco,” is the idea of eccentricity: the word comes from the Portuguese baroco, originally meaning a pearl of wildly irregular shape. Such pearls were prized for their rare beauty and the name was borrowed to describe an aesthetic stance which valued eccentricity over regularity and exuberance over reserve. This program presents a variety of baroque gems, from the familiar to the rarely performed and features works by Corelli, Vivaldi, Schmelzer, Marini, Fasch, Boyce, Mealli and Telemann.

This internationally acclaimed New York-based Baroque ensemble REBEL (pronounced “Re-BEL”) returns to St. Cloud for its second appearance on our series. REBEL is known for bringing a breath of fresh air to early music and enthralls audiences with their unique style and virtuosic, highly expressive interpretation of baroque and classical repertoire – all played on period instruments.

Karen Marie Marmer – Baroque violin & viola
Matthias Maute – recorder & transverse flute
