Barb Kellogg, of Avon, Minnesota, is a photographic artist specializing in nature photography who creates elegant and timeless images. Her journey is to create photography that is about something, not of something. Whether consciously or not, she asks herself, “what do I want this image to feel like?” Barb loves photographing flowers, but can’t ignore the dignified nature of trees, either. While Barb’s primary photographic medium is digital, she has begun incorporating film into her creative repertoire. Barb’s work predominantly features the beauty of nature, but conceptual photography lets her expand her creativity beyond nature, while often still including it.

Her photographic journey led her down the path of becoming an accidental author with her work on humanizing mental illness through a photographic essay.

Barb received the Individual Artist Award grant in 2019. She also was awarded the Artist Career Development Grant in 2017 for her “If You Only Knew” photo essay (formerly titled “What Mental Illness Feels Like”). Both grants were from Central Minnesota Arts Board, with funds provided by The McKnight Foundation. That same project was a solo exhibit at Gallery St. Germain in St. Cloud, MN in May 2018; and at Great River Arts in 2019. She has been part of several juried group exhibits in Minnesota: Arts in Harmony (2015, 2016, 2017, and two images in 2018), including being selected for their Traveling Exhibit, “Arts North”, at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis (2017, 2018); Essential Art in St. Cloud (2015 and 2017); and the Paramount Juried Art Exhibit in St. Cloud (2016 and 2017). Her photograph Pelicans on a Lake received an honorable mention from juror Stan Tekiela in 2015 at the Elk River Arts Alliance Photography exhibit. Barb has had several solo art events in the St. Cloud area, including her exhibit titled “When We Open Our Eyes” in May 2017. She also serves as a board member for Avon Area Arts, a local non-profit arts organization in Avon, Minnesota.

Barb is self taught through online education, books, workshops, help from fellow photographers, and ongoing practice.

Current and upcoming photography projects include increasing her knowledge of photographing with film and creating a book, “If You Only Knew”, revealing what mental illness feels like. The book was published November 2019.
