Grosse Isle

For St. Patrick’s weekend we get to Ireland by way of Canada. From Québec, the trio of Grosse Isle is Fiachra O’Regan (uilleann pipes, whistle, banjo), Sophie Lavoie (fiddle, vocals), and André Marchand (guitar, vocals, feet). That combination of instruments should give a strong hint of the music. As the band bio explains, “The band name refers to the story of the mass arrival of the Irish in the 19th century, on Grosse Ile in the St. Lawrence River, as they fled the Great Famine. It is a striking encounter between two peoples and two cultures.”
